Overview

What Tatkal actually buys — and what it does not

Tatkal is Passport Seva's out-of-turn processing scheme. Pay a higher fee, meet a stricter documentary standard, and your application is processed on priority — most visibly, police verification moves to after issue for typical Tatkal cases, removing the single biggest variable from the pre-issue timeline. That is how Tatkal passports commonly reach dispatch within about one to three working days of a successful appointment.

It is equally important to understand what Tatkal does not buy. It does not create appointment slots — you still need one, and Tatkal slot availability at PSK Vadodara varies. It does not skip verification — the police still verify you, just after the booklet is issued, and an adverse report afterwards can cost you the passport. And it does not override eligibility — the passport office accepts or declines each Tatkal request on its own judgment.

So the honest framing is this: Tatkal is a well-designed premium lane for applicants whose paperwork is already clean and whose dates are genuinely tight. For everyone else, the ₹2,500 difference buys little. Our first job on any Tatkal enquiry is to tell you which side of that line you are on — including when the answer is "save your money, normal is fast enough for you". Our Tatkal vs normal comparison goes deeper on the decision.

Eligibility

Who can use Tatkal

Most ordinary applicants can request Tatkal — fresh applicants, renewals, and (under the July 2026 fee schedule, which prices them explicitly) even lost and damaged passport cases. But Tatkal is a request, not an entitlement. The Granting Officer and the regional passport office decide whether your application is taken out of turn, and they lean towards cases that are simple to decide quickly:

  • Clean reissues — expiring or expired passports with no change in particulars and a good prior record. These are the easiest Tatkal grants.
  • Straightforward fresh applications — consistent documents, no pending proceedings, verifiable address.
  • Urgent replacements — lost or damaged booklets where the police report and Annexure F paperwork are already in order.

Conversely, anything that needs deliberation resists Tatkal: significant changes in personal particulars, doubtful documents, pending criminal proceedings, or records that need RPO enquiry. Reports also indicate that major name-change cases may not be eligible for Tatkal — confirm your specific case on the official portal or ask us to assess it before you pay the premium.

Documents

The Tatkal document rule

Tatkal has always demanded more documentary certainty than normal processing, precisely because the passport office is issuing before the police have verified. In its widely known form this is the "three-document rule": Tatkal applicants have been asked to produce a prescribed number of documents — commonly three — from a notified list of accepted identity and civil records (the list has historically included documents such as Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN, driving licence, service identity cards, educational certificates and similar records).

We deliberately do not print a fixed list here, because the notified list and the exact requirement have changed over the years and are generated per case by the official Document Advisor on passportindia.gov.in. The safe procedure — and the one we follow for every client — is:

  1. Generate the official listRun your exact case (fresh/reissue, adult/minor, Tatkal) through the Document Advisor and save the output. That list is authoritative; summaries on aggregator sites frequently are not.
  2. Assemble to the listOriginals plus one set of self-attested photocopies, including your case's base documents — address proof, date-of-birth proof, old passport for reissue — alongside the Tatkal set.
  3. Cross-check before bookingWe verify each document against the list before you pay the Tatkal fee, because a shortfall discovered at the PSK counter costs you the slot and possibly the premium.

Why this rule exists

Post-issue verification means the state takes on risk. The heavier document requirement is how that risk is offset. Treat it as the price of speed — and as the reason a Tatkal file has to be watertight rather than merely adequate.

Fees

Government fees w.e.f. 1 July 2026 — confirm on the official fee calculator

The Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026 revised all passport fees from 1 July 2026. Under the revised schedule, the Tatkal figure works out to ₹2,500 above the normal fee in every published category (up from ₹2,000 earlier):

CategoryNormalTatkalDifference
Adult, 36 pages (fresh or reissue)₹2,500₹5,000₹2,500
Adult, 60 pages (fresh or reissue)₹3,500₹6,000₹2,500
Minor, 36 pages₹1,750₹4,250₹2,500
Lost / stolen / damaged — adult, 36 pages₹5,000₹7,500₹2,500
Lost / stolen / damaged — adult, 60 pages₹6,000₹8,500₹2,500
Lost / stolen / damaged — minor₹4,250₹6,750₹2,500

Always confirm your exact amount on the official fee calculator before paying. As per long-standing practice, the normal-category fee is paid online at booking and the Tatkal difference is collected at the PSK once the request is accepted — verify the current mechanics when you book. The Tatkal premium is reportedly non-refundable if your application is downgraded to normal processing; confirm on the official FAQ. Our ₹499 professional fee is separate — full breakdown on the passport pricing page.

Timelines

Realistic Tatkal timelines — indicative, not promised

No passport timeline is guaranteed, and Tatkal is no exception. What the commonly observed pattern looks like, end to end:

StageCommonly stated range (indicative)
Getting a Tatkal appointment slotVaries with PSK load — sometimes next-day, sometimes longer
Appointment to dispatch (post-issue PV cases)~1–3 working days
Printing + Speed Post deliverya further ~3–7 working days

Put together, a smooth Tatkal case commonly holds the passport within one to two weeks of applying — dramatically faster than a fresh application waiting on pre-issue verification, which can run from two weeks to 45 days. But note where the variability sits: the slot, the courier, and whether your case is accepted for Tatkal at all. Passport Seva has historically described Tatkal dispatch in terms of one to three working days depending on verification requirements; confirm the current service description on the official portal rather than planning travel around any third-party figure — including this page's.

Our practical advice for tight dates: apply the same day you decide, take the earliest slot within reach even if it means a drive to a POPSK at Anand, Bharuch or Godhra, and keep your phone reachable for the post-issue police verification.

Honest limits

When Tatkal is not the answer

Read this before paying the premium

Tatkal will not help you if: (1) no appointment slot exists within your window — Tatkal accelerates processing, not slot supply; (2) your documents disagree with each other — a mismatch fails at the PSK counter whatever fee you paid; (3) your case needs deliberation — significant particular changes (major name changes are reported as ineligible — confirm on the portal), pending criminal proceedings, or records requiring RPO enquiry; (4) the acceptance decision goes against you — Tatkal is granted at the passport office's discretion, and the premium is reportedly not refunded on downgrade. And no service provider — including us — can promise Tatkal acceptance, a slot, or a date. We prepare; the Ministry of External Affairs, through Passport Seva, decides and issues.

If any of those apply, the better play is usually a clean normal application filed immediately: for reissue cases with post-issue verification, normal processing commonly dispatches in about 7–10 working days anyway, and you keep the ₹2,500. Where the underlying problem is a document mismatch, fix that first — our mismatch guide explains the routes, and our centre handles the corrections, affidavits and Gazette work involved.

Before you decide

The bottom line

Here is the honest bottom line: you can do this yourself, and this page shows you how. But if you want it done in one clean pass — correct documents, correct drafting, no bounced applications — that is exactly what we sell, at a fixed fee you will see in writing before you commit.

FAQs

Tatkal passport questions

How fast is a Tatkal passport really?
Commonly, Tatkal passports are dispatched within about 1–3 working days after a successful PSK appointment, because police verification happens after issue rather than before. Add roughly 3–7 working days for printing logistics and Speed Post delivery. These are indicative ranges, not guarantees — the appointment date itself depends on slot availability.
What does Tatkal cost in 2026?
Under the fees effective 1 July 2026: adult 36-page ₹5,000, adult 60-page ₹6,000, minor 36-page ₹4,250. Lost/damaged Tatkal is ₹7,500 (36pp adult) or ₹8,500 (60pp adult). In every published category the Tatkal figure works out to ₹2,500 above the normal fee. Confirm on the official fee calculator.
Who can apply under Tatkal?
Most ordinary fresh and reissue applicants can request Tatkal, but acceptance is decided by the passport office — it is a request, not a right. Cases involving complex particulars, pending proceedings or certain categories of change may be routed to normal processing regardless of the fee offered.
What is the Tatkal document rule?
Tatkal has historically carried a stricter documentary requirement than normal processing — applicants have been asked to produce a prescribed set of documents (widely described as three documents from a notified list of accepted IDs and records). The exact requirement for your case is generated by the official Document Advisor on passportindia.gov.in — always generate and follow that list rather than relying on any summary, including ours.
How is the Tatkal fee paid?
As per long-standing Passport Seva practice, you pay the normal-category fee online when booking, and the Tatkal difference is collected at the PSK once the Tatkal request is accepted. Confirm the current payment mechanics on the portal when you book, as procedures are updated from time to time.
Is the extra Tatkal fee refunded if my application is treated as normal?
Reportedly the Tatkal premium is non-refundable if an application is downgraded to normal processing — one more reason to be sure your case genuinely qualifies before paying. Confirm the current refund position on the official Passport Seva FAQ.
Does Tatkal skip police verification?
No. Verification still happens — it is simply done after the passport is issued in typical Tatkal cases. If post-issue verification turns up a problem, the passport can be revoked or impounded, so Tatkal is not a way around verification issues.
Can I get a Tatkal appointment at PSK Vadodara tomorrow?
Tatkal appointment slots are generally released separately and often available sooner than normal slots, but availability at PSK Vadodara varies day to day. Tatkal speeds processing after your appointment; it does not conjure appointment slots. We help you find the earliest workable slot, including at nearby POPSKs.
My travel is next week. Will Tatkal save me?
Possibly, if a slot is available quickly, your documents are complete and your case is accepted for Tatkal. Realistically: appointment plus 1–3 working days to dispatch plus 3–7 days delivery. We will tell you honestly whether the dates work before you pay anything.
Can a lost passport be replaced under Tatkal?
The July 2026 fee schedule includes Tatkal rates for lost, stolen and damaged passports (₹7,500 for an adult 36-page booklet), so the route exists — but you still need the police report and Annexure F affidavit first, and acceptance remains at the passport office's discretion.
Is Tatkal worth double the money?
If your travel is weeks away and your case would get post-issue verification anyway — typical for clean reissues — normal processing may already be fast enough, and you save ₹2,500. If you are a fresh applicant facing pre-issue verification with near dates, Tatkal usually is worth it. Our Tatkal vs normal guide walks through the decision.
What does Harsiddhi Services do on a Tatkal case?
For ₹499 we verify that your case and documents realistically qualify, generate the official document list, fill the application under the Tatkal scheme, help you chase the earliest viable appointment and prepare you for the PSK visit. We cannot influence acceptance, verification or dispatch — no one legitimately can.
