Tracking your passport: what each status actually means
The official tracker tells you where your file is; it rarely tells you whether that is normal. This page explains the tracking routes, decodes the stages your application moves through, and draws the honest line between "wait — this is routine" and "act — something needs you".
Typical reply within minutes during office hours.

Where to track: two official routes, and only two
Everything you need lives on the official side. Use the Track Application Status option on the Passport Seva portal, or the mPassport Seva mobile app — published by the Ministry of External Affairs and available on the Google Play and Apple App stores (check the publisher before installing; look for the CPV Division / MEA). Both ask for your file or Application Reference Number (ARN) and date of birth, and show the same underlying record.
Two practical notes. Guard your ARN — it appears on the submission receipt and unlocks everything from tracking to grievances. And skip third-party "passport status" websites entirely: they see nothing the official tracker does not show, and some exist mainly to harvest details. For phone help there is a national call centre — the widely published toll-free line is 1800-258-1800; confirm the current number on the portal footer.
The stages your application moves through
Status wording varies by case and changes over time, so treat this sequence as the map rather than the exact signposts. Broadly, every file travels the same road:
- Submitted and paidYour online application exists, the fee is reconciled, and an appointment is booked. Nothing substantive has been examined yet — statuses here reflect scheduling, not scrutiny.
- PSK visit completedAfter your Kendra visit — token, biometrics, then the Verification and Granting Officer counters — the status shows processing at the Regional Passport Office (RPO Ahmedabad for Vadodara applicants).
- Police verification, where applicableThe most variable stage: your file sits with the police station of your present address, typically one to three weeks — faster in states using the mPassport Police app. Tatkal and many clean reissue cases are verified after issue instead. Our police verification page covers how to be ready.
- GrantedThe decision is in your favour and the file has cleared verification (or qualifies for post-issue verification). From here the process is mechanical.
- PrintingThe booklet is printed at the central passport printing facility. There is nothing to do at this stage and no way to hurry it.
- DispatchedThe passport leaves by India Post Speed Post, and a consignment number appears in your status. Printing plus delivery typically adds around three to seven working days.
The road forks before grant: a reviewing officer may hold the file or raise a written query. That is not a rejection — but it is where a precise, prompt response matters most; read our rejection reasons page before replying.
Speed Post: tracking the last leg
Once dispatched, the passport is a Speed Post article like any other — track the consignment number from your status on the India Post website. Worth knowing:
- Delivery is to the applicant; keep ID handy, as the postman may verify the addressee.
- If nobody is available, the article is generally held briefly at your delivery post office before return — collect it promptly with ID.
- If it shows as returned, raise it with your RPO through the portal's grievance route; do not assume it is lost.
When to wait, and when to act
The honest baseline: there is no fixed statutory delivery time, and the commonly seen ranges are indicative only.
| Scenario | Commonly seen range (indicative) |
|---|---|
| Normal, no pre-PV / post-PV reissue | ~7–10 working days after the appointment |
| Normal with pre-police verification | ~2 weeks to ~30–45 days — PV is the variable |
| Tatkal | Dispatch typically within ~1–3 working days of a successful appointment |
| Printing + Speed Post delivery | a further ~3–7 working days |
Keep waiting when your status is moving through the stages above and you are inside these windows — refreshing the tracker three times a day changes nothing. Act when any of these is true:
- The status explicitly asks something of you — a document, a clarification, a re-visit
- Police verification shows adverse or incomplete, or the police could not find you at the address
- You are well beyond the indicative range with no stage change and no explanation
- The Speed Post tracking shows the article returned undelivered
Each case has a correct next step — and taking the wrong one can cost weeks. That is the moment to send us the status text.
We help you interpret. We cannot expedite.
Let us be plainer than most agencies: no private agency can speed up passport processing — not us, not anyone. The queues inside Passport Seva, the police station and India Post answer only to the authorities. The only legitimate fast lane is Tatkal, chosen and paid for before you apply.
What we genuinely do, for clients whose filing we assisted under our ₹499 service: check the status with you, translate each stage into plain language, say honestly whether your wait is normal, and — when a query lands — help compose the precise response that keeps the file moving. We never ask for your portal password.
When you do NOT need any help with tracking
If your status is progressing normally and nothing is asked of you, you need patience, not a paid service. Track free on the official portal, and come to us only if the file stalls or a query appears. We would rather say that than charge you for watching a webpage.
The bottom line
Every week we meet people who lost a month to a small avoidable mistake. The fee we charge exists to make sure you are not one of them. One message, a fixed written quote, and your paperwork moves.
