Date of birth correction on a passport — evidence first, application second

A wrong date of birth on a passport is fixable, but only through a reissue backed by the right proof — and the passport office applies these rules strictly. We audit your birth evidence, tell you honestly whether your case is document-based or court-order territory, and prepare the file properly.

Overview

There is no "correction" — there is a reissue on evidence

The date of birth printed in a passport cannot be overwritten, stickered or endorsed. If it is wrong — a data-entry slip at the original application, a school record that never matched the birth register, or a date carried forward from an old document — the fix is a full reissue on passportindia.gov.in under change in existing personal particulars. You pay the complete reissue fee and receive a new booklet with a new passport number.

What decides these cases is evidence. A date of birth is the anchor of your legal identity — it drives retirement, majority, insurance and criminal-law questions — so the passport authority examines DOB changes more sceptically than almost any other particular. An application whose proofs are complete and mutually consistent generally moves; one built on documents that contradict each other invites an RPO query, a demand for more justification, or refusal.

That is why our work starts before the form does. We audit every document you hold that states a date of birth, identify which ones support the correct date, and only then decide how — and whether — to file. Where the honest answer is "this needs a court order first", we say so at the start, not after your fee is spent.

Evidence

What Passport Seva accepts as proof of date of birth

The standard list of acceptable DOB proofs (any one, subject to the Document Advisor for your case):

  • Birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births & Deaths or the municipal corporation
  • School leaving / matriculation certificate showing the date of birth
  • PAN card
  • Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
  • Driving licence
  • Voter ID card
  • LIC policy bond
  • Extract of service record (government employees)

Two things follow from this list. First, since the 2016 amendment to the Passport Rules, a birth certificate is not the sole acceptable proof even for people born on or after 26 January 1989 — the wider list applies. Second, in a correction case the document you rely on must show the date you are asking for, and it helps enormously if your other records agree with it. Run the official Document Advisor for the definitive list for your category — we do this for every file we prepare.

If your Aadhaar or PAN carries the wrong date too, fix those alongside or before the passport so the whole record tells one story. Our guide to mismatches across documents explains the sequencing logic, and our PAN correction explainer covers that specific leg.

The dividing line

Document-backed corrections vs court-order cases

Small corrections — a transposed digit, a date that disagrees with your birth certificate by days or months — are generally processed on documents alone: your birth certificate or school records carry the application.

Substantial changes are a different matter. Where the difference is large — a commonly cited threshold is more than two years — the passport office may require a magistrate's or court order declaring the correct date, and can seek additional justification even then. This threshold is practice rather than a published rule, and RPOs decide case by case; treat anything an agent "guarantees" here with suspicion. Confirm your own position via the Document Advisor and, where needed, the RPO — Vadodara applications fall under RPO Ahmedabad.

If a court declaration is needed, that proceeding happens before the passport application, through a lawyer. We are not advocates and do not run court cases, but we prepare the supporting documentation, and for the affidavit and notarisation legs our associated notary desk can assist — see affidavit drafting. Once the order is in hand, the passport reissue proceeds on our standard process.

One route people ask about: the gazette. A gazette notification is the public-record instrument for name changes and certain service-record matters — it is not the standard basis for a passport DOB correction, which runs on birth evidence. If you have been told you need one, read our gazette DOB correction page first; it explains honestly where a gazette helps and where it is wasted money.

Honest advice

What we can do — and what nobody can

Read this before paying anyone for a DOB change

  • We cannot guarantee approval. The decision belongs to the passport authority alone. DOB changes are applied strictly, and a well-prepared file improves your odds without ever making them certain.
  • We cannot shortcut a court-order case. If your change is substantial, no documentation service can substitute for the magistrate's order the RPO may demand.
  • We will not file a weak application. A refused DOB application sits on your record and makes the next attempt harder. If your evidence is not ready, we tell you what to obtain first — even if that means you do not hire us today.
  • What we do deliver: a complete evidence audit, the correct application category, consistent paperwork, appointment booking and pre-visit checking — the parts of the outcome that are actually controllable.
Process

How we handle a DOB correction file

  1. Evidence audit — free assessmentSend photos of your passport data page and every document showing a date of birth. We map which date each supports and tell you whether your case is document-backed, borderline, or court-order territory.
  2. Fix the supporting record firstWhere Aadhaar, PAN or other records carry the wrong date, we correct those legs first so the passport application rests on a consistent file.
  3. Application preparationWe file the reissue on Passport Seva under the correct category, run the Document Advisor, prepare the annexures and book your Kendra slot — see appointment booking assistance.
  4. Pre-visit checkOriginals plus one set of self-attested photocopies, verified against the Document Advisor list the day before your appointment.
  5. Follow-throughIf the RPO raises a query, we help you respond with the right documents. Police verification, where triggered, follows the normal course — see our preparation guide.

FAQs

Passport DOB correction — your questions

Can the date of birth on a passport be corrected at all?
Yes, but only through a reissue supported by documentary proof of the correct date. There is no correction sticker or endorsement — you receive a new booklet with a new passport number, and the passport office decides each case on its evidence.
Which documents does Passport Seva accept as proof of date of birth?
The standard list includes a birth certificate from the Registrar of Births and Deaths or municipal authority, a school leaving or matriculation certificate showing the date of birth, PAN card, Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar, driving licence, Voter ID, LIC policy bond, and a service record extract for government employees. Run the official Document Advisor for the exact list for your case.
Is a birth certificate compulsory for people born after 26 January 1989?
Not any more. Since the 2016 amendment to the Passport Rules, the birth certificate is no longer the sole acceptable proof even for those born on or after 26 January 1989 — the wider list of documents applies. Confirm the current wording on the official Document Advisor.
When is a court order needed for a DOB change?
Small corrections supported by a birth certificate or school records are generally processed on documents alone. Where the change is substantial — a commonly cited threshold is more than two years — the passport office may insist on a magistrate's or court order and additional justification. The decision is case-by-case and rests with the RPO.
Will you guarantee that my DOB correction is approved?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. DOB changes are applied strictly and decided by the passport authority alone. What we do is make sure your evidence is complete, consistent and correctly presented, which is the part of the outcome you can actually control.
How much does a passport DOB correction cost?
Our assistance fee is ₹499. The government reissue fee under the schedule effective 1 July 2026 is ₹2,500 for a 36-page booklet or ₹3,500 for 60 pages, normal processing, paid directly on Passport Seva. Confirm the live figure on the official fee page before paying. Court proceedings, if required, carry their own costs.
My Aadhaar, PAN and school certificate show different dates. What first?
Fix the supporting documents before touching the passport. An application whose proofs disagree with each other invites objection. We typically align the weakest documents to the strongest evidence — usually the birth certificate or matriculation certificate — and only then file the passport reissue.
Does a DOB correction trigger police verification?
A change in personal particulars can involve police verification depending on your case and record. Treat it as likely, keep your address proofs consistent, and see our police verification page for preparation.
Can I apply under Tatkal for a DOB correction?
Tatkal eligibility depends on the category of change, and particulars-change cases are scrutinised more closely. We check whether your specific case is Tatkal-eligible before you pay the higher fee, because the Tatkal premium is not refunded if the application is downgraded.
How long does a DOB correction reissue take?
Indicatively, straightforward document-backed cases follow normal reissue timelines — roughly one to six weeks depending on police verification. Cases needing a court order take as long as the court process takes, before the passport application even starts. No timeline is guaranteed.
Do I also need to correct the DOB on Aadhaar and PAN?
Yes, eventually all your records should carry one date. Whether Aadhaar or the passport moves first depends on which documents currently support the correct date. We map the sequence for you so each corrected document strengthens the next application.
Where does the gazette fit into a date of birth correction?
A gazette notification is a public-record instrument used mainly for name changes and by some departments for service-record DOB matters — it is not the standard route for a passport DOB correction, which runs on birth evidence. See our gazette DOB correction page to check whether your situation is one where a gazette actually helps.
