PAN correction explained: name, date of birth and fees
A wrong spelling or date of birth on your PAN quietly blocks PAN-Aadhaar linking, bank KYC and tax filing. Correcting it is straightforward once you know the route, the proof required and the fee. This guide walks through both official portals and how PAN fits into fixing your wider records.

When a PAN correction is worth doing
PAN is the spine of your financial identity, so a small error on it spreads quietly. You should correct your PAN when:
- The name is misspelt, or does not match your Aadhaar and bank records.
- The date of birth is wrong, which blocks PAN-Aadhaar linking.
- You have changed your name — after marriage, or a full legal change — and PAN still shows the old one.
- The father's name, photo or signature printed on the card is incorrect.
A correction updates the details recorded against your existing PAN. The 10-character PAN number itself does not change — you are fixing what is printed and stored against it, not getting a new number.
How to apply — Protean or UTIITSL
The Income Tax Department authorises two agencies to process PAN applications, and either can handle a correction. You choose one, not both.
- Open the correction form. On Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL, choose "Change or Correction in existing PAN data".
- Enter your existing PAN and tick the fields to change. Only the fields you tick are updated; leave the rest as they are.
- Complete KYC. Aadhaar-based e-KYC can make the process paperless; otherwise you upload proof and, in some cases, send signed documents.
- Upload supporting proof. Attach the document that supports the corrected value — see the next section on what counts.
- Pay and note the acknowledgement. Pay the fee and keep the 15-digit acknowledgement number to track status.
- Receive e-PAN, then the card. An updated e-PAN often follows within a few working days; a physical card typically arrives within about two weeks.
For deep GST-linked or business PAN matters, our specialist site GujaratGST.in and our GST registration page explain how PAN feeds into registration.
What proof you need, and what it costs
The supporting document depends on what you are correcting:
| Change | Usual supporting proof |
|---|---|
| Spelling correction (name already correct elsewhere) | Aadhaar, passport, or school certificate showing the correct version |
| Date of birth correction | Birth certificate, school leaving certificate, passport or Aadhaar |
| Name change after marriage | Marriage certificate (or the corrected Aadhaar) |
| Legal name change | Gazette notification |
Fees. Commonly cited government charges are around ₹107 for a physical PAN card dispatched within India, ₹101 for a paperless application, and roughly ₹66–₹72 where only an e-PAN is required; dispatch abroad costs more. These figures can change — confirm the current amount on the Protean or UTIITSL portal before paying. Our professional charge for preparing and filing the application, where you want that help, is separate and quoted up front.
PAN-Aadhaar linkage: the reason most corrections happen
PAN and Aadhaar must be linked, and the link fails when the name or date of birth does not match between the two. An unlinked PAN can become inoperative, which then blocks banking, higher TDS applies, and tax filing stalls. So a mismatch is not cosmetic — it has real consequences.
Correct Aadhaar first, then PAN
Because linking compares the two records and many agencies validate against Aadhaar, the clean sequence is: fix Aadhaar to the correct version first, then correct PAN to match it. Do it the other way and you can find yourself redoing one. The verification portal for linking status sits on incometax.gov.in.
If your name is wrong in several places at once, work from the master-spelling plan in our guide to name mismatches across documents before you spend money on any single correction.
When a gazette is the proof — and when it is not
A gazette is not always required
If you are only fixing a spelling and another official document already shows the correct version, that document is usually enough — no gazette needed. A gazette becomes the standard proof when you are actually changing your name and nothing on record shows the new one. For a marriage surname change, a marriage certificate is commonly accepted.
We will tell you plainly which route your case needs, and we will not push a gazette where a simpler proof does the job. See when you actually need a gazette.
What we cannot do: we are a documentation facilitator, not the Income Tax Department or its PAN agencies. We prepare and file a clean correction application; the correction is approved and the card issued by the authorised agency, and no one can guarantee approval or an exact date.
