Aadhaar update rules: the limits that catch people out
You cannot change your Aadhaar details freely. Name can be updated only twice in a lifetime, date of birth and gender only once each — so a careless correction can use up a chance you needed. Here is exactly how the limits work, what the process costs, and how to get it right the first time.

The limits UIDAI places on changes
Aadhaar is meant to be a stable identity, so UIDAI restricts how often the core fields can be altered. Per its published rules:

Why the limit catches people out
Someone corrects a spelling, then marries and wants a new surname, then spots that a middle name is still wrong — and discovers the two name-change chances are gone. The free online document-update facility
UIDAI has been running a free online facility to refresh the documents linked to your Aadhaar — uploading a current proof of identity and proof of address through the myAadhaar portal. At the time of writing, the free window has been extended to 14 June 2027. This is aimed at keeping the documents on file current, especially for Aadhaar issued years ago.
Free document refresh is not the same as a demographic change
The free online facility is about re-uploading supporting documents. Changing the actual name, date of birth or gender is a separate demographic update, is subject to the lifetime limits above, and generally carries the standard fee. Always confirm the current deadline and what your specific change involves on the official portal: myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
What an Aadhaar update costs
Government fees at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra are modest and set by UIDAI. Commonly cited figures are:
- Demographic update (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number): around ₹75.
- Biometric update (fingerprints, iris, photo): around ₹125.
These are government charges, and they can change — confirm the current amount at the centre or on uidai.gov.in before you go. Any professional fee we charge for preparing and coordinating the paperwork is separate, disclosed up front, and only applies where you ask us to handle the documentation.
How an update actually works
- Decide the exact change and the proof. Fix the final spelling or corrected value, and identify a document UIDAI accepts as proof for that field.
- Choose the channel. Some demographic changes can be requested online through myAadhaar; others — particularly biometric updates and certain corrections — need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
- Submit with supporting documents. The proof must clearly support the new value. A weak or mismatched document is the usual reason an update is rejected.
- Note the URN and track. You receive an Update Request Number to track progress; processing usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks.
- Download the updated Aadhaar. Once approved, download the refreshed e-Aadhaar and check every character before relying on it elsewhere.
Because most rejections trace back to the supporting document, this is where careful preparation pays off — matching the proof to the field, and to the exact version you are aiming for across all your records.
When a gazette is the proof — and when it is not
Do not buy a gazette you do not need
For a straightforward spelling correction, an existing document that already shows the right version — passport, PAN, school certificate — is often accepted, and no gazette is required. A gazette becomes the standard proof when you are genuinely changing your name and no record yet carries the new one. For a surname change after marriage, a marriage certificate is commonly accepted instead.
