Indian passports carry no endorsement or sticker route for changing personal particulars. If the address on your passport record is to change, you file a reissue application on the Passport Seva portal: full application, full government fee, appointment, usually police verification at the new address, and finally a brand-new booklet with a new passport number.
One nuance worth knowing before you spend money: where the address appears depends on your booklet's series. Older booklets print it on the last page; in newer-format series it may not appear on the visible pages at all, being held in the passport records instead. Check your own last page — and because formats have been changing with the e-passport rollout, confirm how your case is treated on the official Passport Seva portal rather than assuming.

When you do NOT need a passport address change
Save the reissue fee if any of these describe you
Your passport remains a fully valid travel document until expiry, wherever you now live. Moving house does not invalidate it, and no rule forces an immediate update.
- You just moved and want the record "tidy" — tidiness alone rarely justifies a full reissue fee; the passport works fine for travel
- You are flying domestically or internationally on the existing booklet — immigration checks identity and validity, not whether you still live at the printed address
- Your passport expires within the next year or so — wait and update the address as part of the normal renewal; one fee instead of two
- You need current-address proof for a bank or SIM — use Aadhaar, a utility bill or a rent agreement; a passport is a poor and expensive address-proof to maintain
- A form asks for your "permanent address" — forms accept your declaration with standard proofs; they do not require the passport itself to show it

- You are renewing anyway — expiry, exhausted pages, or a name change after marriage; the new address rides along at no extra government cost
- An embassy or visa process expects it — some consulates and sponsoring employers want the passport record to match your present city; check their checklist
- Attestation, immigration or PCC work ties to your jurisdiction — a Police Clearance Certificate issues against your present address on record
- Your old address is in another state — long-term migrants to Gujarat often prefer records aligned to where police verification can find them
- An institution has formally asked for it — in writing beats in rumour; we will read the requirement with you

Documents and acceptable address proofs
Originals plus one set of self-attested photocopies at the PSK:
- Old passport in original, with photocopies of the first two and last two pages, the ECR/Non-ECR page and any observation pages
- Any one proof of the new present address — Aadhaar, Voter ID, electricity or water bill, landline/postpaid mobile bill, gas connection proof, rent agreement, running bank passbook (photo page), income tax assessment order, employer certificate on letterhead, or spouse's passport copy naming you as spouse
- Previous-year address details declared in the form if you have lived at the new address for under a year
- NOC or Prior Intimation (Annexure G/H) for government and PSU employees

- Address proof not matching the form — "B-204, Shree Residency" on the proof but "204, Shri Residency" in the application; enter it character for character
- Using an Aadhaar that still shows the old address — update Aadhaar first or pick a proof that already shows the new address
- Being unreachable during police verification — missed calls and absent applicants stretch a two-week case into two months
- Forgetting the previous-year addresses — under a year at the new home means declaring the earlier addresses too, with proofs handy
- Assuming the old passport number survives — it does not; visas, bank KYC and employer records all need the new number
