DigiLocker explained: issued versus uploaded documents
DigiLocker lets you keep official documents in a government digital wallet — but there is one distinction that decides whether an office accepts them: issued versus uploaded. Understand that, and DigiLocker becomes genuinely useful for KYC and verification. Miss it, and you will be surprised at a counter.

What DigiLocker is
DigiLocker is a government digital wallet for documents, offered under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and accessed at digilocker.gov.in or through its mobile app. You sign in with your Aadhaar-linked mobile, and it lets you store documents electronically and — more importantly — fetch authentic copies straight from the authorities that issue them.
The point of it is to reduce the folder of photocopies most of us carry. Instead of a dog-eared driving licence and a laminated registration card, you can pull verified electronic versions on demand. But whether a given office treats those as good as the original depends entirely on the distinction in the next section.
Issued versus uploaded documents
Everything inside DigiLocker falls into one of two buckets, and they are not equal:
| Issued documents | Uploaded documents | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | Pulled electronically from the issuing authority | A file you scan and add yourself |
| Authenticity | Carries the issuer's digital signature; verifiable at source | Only as reliable as your scan; not auto-verified |
| Legal standing | Recognised at par with the physical original under the IT Act rules | Treated as a personal copy, like any photocopy |
| Typical use | KYC, verification, official submissions (subject to acceptance) | Personal convenience and record-keeping |
So when someone says "DigiLocker documents are valid as originals", they mean issued ones. A licence you fetched from the transport department is authentic; a photo of that same licence you uploaded yourself is just a photo. Always check which kind you are holding before you rely on it.
Using DigiLocker for KYC and verification
Because issued documents can be authenticated at source, many banks, telecom operators and government services accept them for KYC and verification. The document is often shared through a secure consent flow rather than as a loose file, which is what gives it its trust.
Acceptance still varies — confirm first
Not every counter is set up to accept a DigiLocker document, and rules differ by institution and purpose. Before you rely on it for something time-sensitive — a loan, a tender, an appointment — ask the specific office whether they accept an issued DigiLocker document, and keep a physical original as backup.
DigiLocker is only as correct as the records behind it. If your name or date of birth is wrong on the underlying document, it will be wrong when you fetch it too — which is why sorting out any mismatch across your documents comes first, before DigiLocker is any use.
Using it safely
DigiLocker is an official platform, but the account is yours to protect:
- Only sign in on the official site or app, never through a link someone sends you.
- Keep your login and OTP private — no genuine service asks for them over a call or message.
- Grant document-sharing consent only on official portals you intended to use.
- Review which services you have linked, and remove any you no longer use.
These are the same habits that protect your Aadhaar and banking — see our note on document safety within legal documentation.
What DigiLocker cannot do
It stores documents — it does not create them
DigiLocker delivers documents that already exist. It does not create a new legal record. It cannot change your name, correct a spelling, publish a gazette or notarise an affidavit. If you need a genuine gazette name change or a notarised affidavit, that is a separate process — DigiLocker may simply make the finished document easier to access afterwards.
Where we fit. We do not run DigiLocker and there is nothing to buy there — setting it up is free and easy. Our role is upstream: making sure the underlying documents are correct, consistent and, where needed, freshly created, so that whatever you pull into DigiLocker is right to begin with.
The bottom line
There are two ways forward from here: bookmark this page and handle each step yourself, or send one WhatsApp message and have our team carry it. Either way you now know exactly what should happen — which is how we like our clients: informed.
