Basics & classes

What is a digital signature certificate (DSC)?
A DSC is an electronic credential issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000 by Certifying Authorities licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Ministry of Electronics & IT. It lets you sign electronic documents and government filings in a way that proves who signed and that nothing was altered afterwards — the digital equivalent of a handwritten signature, with stronger evidence behind it. Our DSC services overview covers what we issue and for whom.
What happened to Class 2 DSCs — why is everything Class 3 now?
The CCA directed that issuance of Class 2 certificates be withdrawn from 1 January 2021, and since then every new applicant receives Class 3, the highest assurance level. Older portal help pages still mention Class 2 because previously issued certificates remained usable until they expired. If you are buying today, Class 3 is the only choice — and the only one you need.
What is the difference between an individual DSC and an organisation DSC?
An individual DSC is issued in your own name and is what directors, proprietors, professionals and taxpayers use for GST, MCA and income tax work. An organisation DSC is issued to a person as an authorised signatory of an organisation, with the organisation's name inside the certificate — the form generally required or preferred for e-tenders, DGFT filings by non-proprietor entities, and ICEGATE.
What are signature, encryption and combo certificates?
A signature certificate signs documents and filings — that is what MCA, GST and income tax need. An encryption certificate encrypts data, such as bid documents on e-procurement portals. A combo is the pair together, and it is the standard purchase for e-tendering, where bids must be both signed and encrypted — see the tender DSC page for how this plays out in practice.
Is a DSC the same as Aadhaar eSign?
No. Aadhaar eSign is a one-time online signature made through Aadhaar authentication, useful where portals accept it. A DSC is a certificate you hold on a hardware token, valid for one to three years, and it is the mode certain filings require — companies and LLPs on GST, MCA filings, tender bids. Our knowledge article on DSC vs eSign compares them properly.

Buying & documents

What documents do I need for an individual DSC?
On the paperless Aadhaar-OTP route: your Aadhaar number with its linked mobile, PAN as per the CA's form, your own mobile and email for OTPs, and a short live video — no physical paperwork. If Aadhaar OTP is not workable, a PAN-based route exists with PAN and address-proof uploads plus the same video and OTP checks. Our DSC document checklist is downloadable if you like lists.
What documents does an organisation DSC need?
The signatory's own PAN or Aadhaar and verification, plus organisational proof that varies by entity: an authorisation letter and partnership deed for firms, an authorisation letter or board resolution with the MCA signatory list for companies and LLPs. Where the organisation cannot be verified online through GST records, CAs additionally ask for the organisation's PAN, registration certificate and a bank-attested recent bank statement. The organisation DSC page breaks this down by entity type.
What validity should I choose — 1, 2 or 3 years?
CAs issue Class 3 certificates with one, two or three-year validity; three years is the maximum commonly offered. Longer validity costs more upfront but postpones the renewal cycle, including fresh eKYC, video verification and portal re-registration. For regular GST or MCA users, two years is the popular middle ground; for a one-off need, one year can be enough.
How much does a DSC cost?
Pricing depends on the certificate type (individual or organisation, sign-only or combo), the validity period, and whether you need a USB token. Rather than publish a generic figure, we give a fixed written quote for your exact combination before any work begins — see DSC pricing for how our quotes work. Message us on WhatsApp with what you need it for and you will have the number in minutes.
Who actually issues the certificate — Harsiddhi Services?
No, and we are careful about this: certificates are issued only by Certifying Authorities licensed by the CCA — the official list is on cca.gov.in. Harsiddhi Services is a facilitator: we prepare the application, guide you through eKYC and video verification, supply and set up the token, and register the certificate on your portals. The certificate itself always comes from a licensed CA.
Cluster 3

eKYC & issuance

How does the paperless Aadhaar eKYC work?
You share your Aadhaar number, receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, and the CA fetches your verified identity electronically — no forms, no photocopies. Aadhaar biometric and offline-Aadhaar variants also exist, along with PAN-based and banking eKYC for applicants who cannot use Aadhaar OTP. It is the fastest route to issuance by a wide margin.
What happens during video verification?
A short, live, interactive video recorded through the CA's system — uploaded clips are not accepted. You appear on camera for at least 20 seconds with your face filling around half the frame and read out random codes shown to you. It typically takes a few minutes, and the certificate must then be issued within two days of a successful video. Our video verification guide walks through it with screenshots-level detail.
How quickly can I get my DSC?
For an individual on the paperless Aadhaar-OTP route, typically within 24 hours of completing verification — often faster. Organisation certificates typically take one to three working days because the organisational documents are checked manually by the CA. These are typical times, not promises; the CA's workload sets the actual pace.
Do I need to visit your office to get a DSC?
No. The entire process — application, eKYC, OTPs, video verification — happens on your phone from anywhere in India, with us guiding on WhatsApp. The token is handed over at our Vadodara office or dispatched to you, and setup support is remote or walk-in, whichever suits. Plenty of clients we have never met in person sign every month.
Can I get a DSC without Aadhaar?
Yes. The CCA's identity verification guidelines permit PAN-based eKYC with document upload, banking eKYC through your bank record, and CA-assisted verification for cases such as foreign applicants. These routes involve a little more paperwork than Aadhaar OTP and can take longer, but they end in the same Class 3 certificate. Video and OTP verification still apply.
Cluster 4

Tokens & installation

Why must the DSC live on a USB token — can I keep it on my laptop?
CCA security rules require a Class 3 subscriber's private key to be generated and stored in FIPS-validated hardware — the USB token — from which it can never be copied out. Signing happens on the token itself, protected by your PIN. A certificate file kept on a hard disk is not permitted for Class 3, and any provider offering one should worry you.
Can one token hold more than one certificate?
Yes. A token routinely carries a signature and encryption pair, and it can also hold your old and new certificates side by side during a renewal changeover. Common models in India include the Feitian ePass2003, Watchdata ProxKey, HYP2003, TrustKey and mToken — all serving the same purpose with minor differences in software.
What software needs to be installed before I can sign?
Two layers: the token vendor's driver or middleware, so your computer can see the certificate, and the signing utility of whichever portal you use — emSigner for GST, the emsigner/emBridge utility for income tax e-filing, the MCA utility for company filings. Install the driver first, confirm the certificate is visible, then add the portal utility. The installation page has the full sequence and an error-fixing table.
What if I forget or block my token PIN?
Repeated wrong attempts lock the token — by design, so a lost token is useless to a stranger. Unlocking depends on the model, and the blunt instrument, reinitialising the token, erases the certificates on it, after which the certificate must be downloaded afresh. If your PIN is locked, stop guessing and get help before running any reset tool.
Will my DSC work on a Mac?
Token vendors publish middleware for Windows and, for many models, macOS — but Indian government portals and their signing utilities are built and tested primarily for Windows, and several behave reliably only there. If a Mac is your only machine, tell us which portal you need before buying; for regular filings we recommend access to a Windows PC.
Cluster 5

Portal registration

How do I register my DSC on the GST portal?
Log in and go to Services → User Services → Register/Update DSC, with the emSigner utility running and your token plugged in. One strict rule: only the person whose PAN appears in the GST registration can register the DSC, so the certificate must be in that person's name. DSC signing is the required mode for companies and LLPs — the GST DSC page has the full walkthrough.
How is a DSC registered on the MCA portal?
On MCA V3, the certificate is associated through the Register DSC service under your profile, using the MCA DSC utility — directors register against their DIN, practising professionals against their membership number, and others with PAN. Until this association is done, the portal will not accept your signature on forms. Details on the MCA DSC page.
Do I need a DSC for income tax filing?
Companies must sign their returns with a DSC, as must persons whose accounts are subject to tax audit; others can generally use EVC or Aadhaar-based verification. The certificate is registered on the e-filing portal under My Profile → Register DSC, with the signing utility and token drivers in place. The income tax DSC page covers who needs one and how registration works.
What DSC do I need for tenders, DGFT or ICEGATE?
E-procurement portals typically require a Class 3 organisation certificate as a signature-plus-encryption combo, since bids are encrypted as well as signed — see the tender DSC page. DGFT needs a Class 3 certificate registered against your IEC, with the certificate matching the proprietor's PAN or the organisation name in the IEC profile — details on the DGFT DSC page. ICEGATE requires Class 3 for customs filings; the ICEGATE DSC page explains who needs it. Requirements vary by portal, so confirm the target portal's rules before buying.
Cluster 6

Renewal & validity

What happens when my DSC expires?
Signing stops. Portals reject signatures from an expired certificate, so GST returns, MCA forms and tender bids wait until a new certificate is issued and re-registered. There is no fine for the expiry itself and no revival of the old certificate — you buy a new one the same way. The only real damage is a deadline missed during the gap.
Is renewal different from buying a new DSC?
Not technically. There is no extension mechanism — renewal is the issuance of a fresh Class 3 certificate for a new one, two or three-year term, with fresh eKYC and video verification. A valid eKYC account with the same CA, which lasts up to two years, can speed things up, but no step is waived. This also means you can renew through any provider, not just the original one.
Can I keep my old USB token when renewing?
Usually yes — the renewed certificate downloads onto the same token, and a new token is not automatically required. The exception is a very old token whose firmware predates current certificate formats; those need the vendor's upgrade tool or a replacement. We check your token model before quoting so the answer is settled up front.
After renewal, why does the portal still say my certificate is expired?
Because portals remember the specific certificate you registered, not just your name. The renewed DSC has a new serial number and must be registered afresh on every portal — GST, MCA, income tax, and DGFT, EPFO or tender portals where applicable — with the expired certificate removed so it stops being offered at signature time. Until then, signing fails; the renewal page shows the changeover portal by portal.
Can NRIs or foreign nationals get an Indian DSC?
Yes — CAs issue foreign individual and organisation variants, and the CCA's verification guidelines provide CA-assisted routes for applicants without Aadhaar. The documentation is heavier than a domestic paperless application and timelines are longer, so start early. Tell us your situation on WhatsApp and we will map the exact route before you commit to anything.
