DSC for income tax e-filing — for companies and audit cases
If your accounts are audited, or you file for a company, the e-filing portal expects a digital signature — not an OTP. We issue the Class 3 DSC, register it under My Profile on incometax.gov.in, and sort out expired-DSC re-registration before filing season pressure.
Typical reply within minutes during office hours.
Why people choose us over any agent
No hidden charges, ever: our fee and the government fee are quoted separately, in writing, before you pay a rupee. If a cheaper official route fits your case, we tell you.
That honesty is why most new clients come from referrals.
DSC or EVC — who needs which on the e-filing portal
The income tax portal offers several ways to verify a return: Aadhaar OTP, net-banking EVC, and a Digital Signature Certificate. For most salaried individuals, any EVC route works and costs nothing. But companies, and taxpayers whose accounts are subject to tax audit, must sign with a DSC — the OTP routes are not available to them. The categories are set by the income tax rules and reflected in the portal's own help pages; confirm the current position for your case on the e-filing portal's Register DSC manual before a deadline turns the question urgent.
In a typical audit-case setup there are two DSCs in play: the taxpayer's (or the company's authorised signatory's) certificate signs the return, and the chartered accountant's own certificate signs the audit report. Neither can substitute for the other, which is why we often issue certificates for a business owner and their auditor's office in the same week before the audit due date.
If you are new to return filing itself, our plain-language income tax return basics guide explains what gets filed and when — this page deals only with the signature side.
What the DSC signs on the e-filing portal
- Income tax returns — mandatory DSC signing for companies and tax-audit cases; optional (instead of EVC) for anyone else who prefers a cryptographic signature.
- Audit forms — Form 3CA/3CB-3CD and similar reports, signed by the auditor with the auditor's own certificate.
- Other statutory forms and e-verification — various forms on the portal accept or require DSC verification depending on the taxpayer type.
The certificate you need for all of this is an individual Class 3 signing certificate on a USB token, issued against your PAN details. Since 2021, Class 3 is the only class issued, so there is no class decision to make — only validity (1, 2 or 3 years). No encryption certificate is involved in e-filing; that is a tender-portal concept.
The portal pairing to remember: the DSC is tied to your PAN and registered on your login. A company return is signed through the authorised signatory's registered DSC; a certificate in the accountant's name on the director's profile will not register.
Registering the DSC on incometax.gov.in
Unlike GST's Services menu or MCA's role-based association, the e-filing portal keeps DSC registration inside your personal profile:
- Prepare the computer. Install the USB token's drivers and the portal's signing utility so the browser can reach the certificate — our DSC installation guide covers both.
- Log in and open My Profile. Choose Register DSC, enter the email linked to the token, and proceed with the token plugged in.
- Select the certificate and sign. Pick your certificate, enter the token PIN, and complete registration. The official user manual shows the current screens if anything looks different.
- Test before the due date. We recommend a trial signing well ahead of filing day — driver and utility issues only ever surface at the worst time.
Registration is per-login, one certificate at a time: registering a new DSC replaces the previous one on your profile.
Expired DSC — how re-registration works
DSCs run out quietly. The portal will refuse to sign with an expired certificate, and there is no way to extend one — renewal always means a fresh certificate with fresh eKYC and video verification. The sequence that gets you filing again:
- Obtain the new certificate — typically issued within 24 hours for individual paperless applications; the existing token is usually reusable.
- Register the new DSC on the portal through My Profile → Register DSC, exactly as the first time. The portal's manual describes re-registration on expiry as the standard route.
- Update other portals too. If the same certificate was registered on GST, MCA or a tender portal, each needs the new certificate separately — expiry on one means expiry on all.
Timing tip: if your certificate expires between July and October, renew early. Audit-season pressure at Certifying Authorities is real, and "typically 24 hours" assumes verification goes through promptly.
When you do not need an income tax DSC
Most individual taxpayers never need a DSC for income tax. If you are salaried, or run a small business below audit thresholds, Aadhaar-OTP e-verification is free and sufficient. We would rather tell you that on WhatsApp than sell an unnecessary certificate. Buy one only if you fall in a mandatory category, or you already need a Class 3 DSC for GST, MCA or tenders — one certificate serves them all.
What we cannot do: we are a facilitation centre, not a Certifying Authority or the Income Tax Department. We cannot bypass video verification, decide whether your case legally requires a DSC (your tax advisor or the portal's guidance settles that), or guarantee portal acceptance of a filing.
The bottom line
There are two ways forward from here: bookmark this page and handle each step yourself, or send one WhatsApp message and have our team carry it. Either way you now know exactly what should happen — which is how we like our clients: informed.
