Class 3 DSC for the GST portal — issued, installed and registered
Companies and LLPs cannot file GST with an OTP. We issue the Class 3 DSC, set up the USB token and emSigner, and register it on gst.gov.in so your returns go through on the due date.
Typical reply within minutes during office hours.

Who must sign on the GST portal with a DSC
The GST portal accepts two ways of signing: a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC, an OTP to the registered mobile and email). It is not a free choice for everyone — companies and LLPs are required to sign with a DSC, while proprietorships, partnerships and most other taxpayers may use EVC. Confirm the current rule for your entity type on the official GST portal manual.
In practice, the moment a private limited company or LLP takes GST registration, at least one director or designated partner needs a valid Class 3 DSC on a USB token, registered against the GSTIN. Every subsequent GST return, amendment and reply is signed with it. An expired DSC cannot be worked around with an OTP at the last minute, which is why it is a common reason company returns miss the due date.
One mechanic trips people up constantly: the portal is PAN-based. Only a DSC whose PAN matches an authorised signatory named in the registration can be registered against that GSTIN — a DSC in the accountant's name will simply be rejected.
Which DSC to buy for GST
For GST you need an individual Class 3 signature certificate in the authorised signatory's name. Since 1 January 2021, Class 3 is the only class issued to new applicants, so any fresh DSC qualifies — the GST manual's older "Class 2 or Class 3" wording reflects certificates issued before that cut-off.
You do not need an encryption or combo certificate for GST — those are for e-tendering; a plain signing certificate is enough. Validity is 1, 2 or 3 years, with 2 years the popular choice. The certificate lives on a FIPS-validated USB token, because Class 3 private keys cannot sit as a file on a hard disk.
Multiple GSTINs, one DSC. The certificate belongs to the person, not the registration. If the same director is the authorised signatory for three group companies, one DSC can be registered against all three GSTINs — provided their PAN appears as a signatory in each registration.
How we issue a GST DSC in about 24 hours
DSC issuance is fully paperless for most individual signatories. Certificates are issued by CCA-licensed Certifying Authorities; we handle the application, verification and token setup as your local facilitator in Vadodara.
- Share basics on WhatsApp. Signatory's name as per PAN, Aadhaar-linked mobile, email, and preferred validity. We confirm a fixed quote before anything starts.
- Paperless eKYC. Aadhaar-OTP verification, mobile and email OTPs, and a short live video verification through the CA's system — mandatory under CCA rules.
- Certificate downloaded to token. Typically within 24 hours of successful verification. We load it onto a new token or your existing supported one.
- Portal setup. We install the token drivers and emSigner on your filing computer, register the DSC on gst.gov.in, and run a test signing.
Timelines are typical, not guaranteed — verification queues at the Certifying Authority can add time, which is why we advise against ordering a DSC on the morning a return is due.
Registering the DSC on gst.gov.in
Buying the certificate is half the job — the portal will not accept a signature from a DSC it has never seen. Registration happens inside the taxpayer login: Services → User Services → Register/Update DSC. The portal lists the PANs of the authorised signatories on record; you select the matching PAN with the USB token plugged in, and the certificate is linked to your login. The on-screen flow is documented in the GST portal's Register/Update DSC manual.
Two prerequisites must be in place on that computer: the token's driver software and the emSigner utility. Skip either and the portal behaves as if no certificate exists. The same screen is used again after every renewal — a renewed DSC is a new certificate, and the portal must be updated to it.
emSigner and the errors that block GST signing
emSigner is the GST portal's signing utility — a small program that must be installed and actually running whenever you register or sign with a DSC. Most "DSC not working on GST" panics trace back to a handful of causes:
- emSigner not installed or not running. The portal cannot reach the token, so the certificate list stays empty or signing fails. Start the utility and retry; exact error text varies by browser, and the official GST manual covers the setup.
- Token drivers missing. The certificate never appears because the computer cannot read the token — see our DSC installation guide.
- PAN mismatch. The DSC's PAN matches no authorised signatory in the registration. The fix is an amendment to add the signatory, or a DSC in the correct name — not repeated retries.
- Renewed certificate not updated. The portal still holds the expired one. Run Register/Update DSC again with the new token attached.
- Token PIN locked. Repeated wrong PIN attempts lock the token; signing then fails even though everything else is correct.
- Old token firmware. Some older tokens need a CSP or firmware upgrade before accepting newer certificates — we check this during renewal.
We walk clients through these fixes over a call or screen share; a broader list is in our common DSC errors article.
When you do not need a GST DSC
If you are a proprietor or individual taxpayer, you probably do not need a DSC for GST. EVC — the OTP to your registered mobile and email — signs registrations and returns for most non-company taxpayers at no cost, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a certificate you will not use. A DSC still makes sense if you also file e-tenders, MCA forms or tax-audit returns, since one Class 3 DSC serves all those portals.
What we cannot do: we are a facilitation centre, not a Certifying Authority or a government body. We cannot bypass video verification, issue a DSC in a name that does not match your PAN, or guarantee the GST portal accepts a filing — acceptance rests with the portal and the department.
The bottom line
We built this page to be useful even if you never hire us. If you do, you get the same thing this page gave you — straight answers — plus a team that files, follows up and finishes. The quote is free and binding.
