Why renewal means a brand-new certificate
Here is the fact that reframes the whole subject: there is no such thing as extending an existing DSC. When people say they are "renewing", what actually happens is that a fresh certificate is issued for a new one, two or three year term. The old certificate is not topped up or reactivated — it expires, and a separate new certificate takes over.
Because it is a fresh issuance, the identity checks of the Controller of Certifying Authorities apply again: fresh eKYC, a live video verification, and mobile and email verification. There is one small mercy — if you already hold a valid eKYC account with the Certifying Authority, up to two years old, it can speed the process. But the verification steps are repeated, not skipped. When to apply — and why "before expiry" matters
Apply before your current certificate expires. This is not just tidy advice; it is about avoiding a gap in your ability to sign. A DSC does not warn portals in advance — on the expiry date it simply stops working, and every filing that needs it is blocked until a new certificate is issued and re-registered.
A comfortable buffer is a couple of weeks ahead of the expiry date. That matters more for an organization certificate, whose documents are verified by hand and which commonly takes one to three working days, than for an individual paperless certificate that can often issue the same day. If you have a company filing due, a tender to bid on, or a tax deadline approaching, treat the DSC expiry as its own deadline sitting just before it.
The trap of the silent expiry
Nothing prompts you when a DSC lapses — you discover it the moment a filing fails. Diarise the expiry date the day the certificate is issued, and again a couple of weeks before. A lapse the week of a statutory deadline is entirely avoidable with one reminder.
Can you reuse the same USB token?
Usually, yes — and this is the reassuring part. The fresh certificate can be downloaded onto your existing token, so you do not automatically need to buy new hardware. The token is a reusable security device; only the certificate on it has expired.
The exception is age. Very old tokens may have firmware that no longer supports the newest certificates, in which case a firmware or CSP upgrade — or, rarely, a replacement token — is needed. Vendors publish upgrade tools for exactly this. If your token is a few years old and has been through a renewal or two already, it is worth checking it is still supported before renewal day rather than discovering a problem mid-process. Re-registering the new DSC on every portal
This is the step that catches people out. A renewed DSC is a new certificate, and the portals you file on remember the old one. Until you tell each portal about the new certificate, it still expects the expired one, and signing will simply fail even though your token works perfectly.
So after renewal, the new certificate must be registered again on every portal where the old one was registered, and the expired certificate removed to avoid signing errors. The usual list includes:
- MCA21 (V3) — re-register under your profile using the MCA DSC utility. See DSC for MCA.

- DGFT, EPFO and tender portals — re-register wherever the old certificate was used, including tender portals.
Miss one, and you will hit a signing error the next time you file there — which is exactly the kind of avoidable surprise a planned renewal is meant to prevent.
The renewal, from start to signing again
- Note the expiry and start early. Begin a couple of weeks ahead, especially for an organization certificate.
- Apply for a fresh certificate. Choose the type — individual or organization — and the term, one, two or three years.
- Complete fresh verification. eKYC, live video verification, and mobile and email OTPs, as with a first-time DSC.
- Download onto your token. The new certificate goes onto your existing token, or a new one if the old is unsupported.
- Re-register on every portal. Register the new DSC and remove the expired one wherever you file, then sign as normal.
Done in this order, renewal is smooth and you never lose the ability to sign. Done at the last minute, any one of the steps can become a crisis — which is why the whole point of this page is: renewal is a fresh certificate, so treat it like one and start ahead of time.
