DIY versus professional help: an honest comparison
We run a documentation service, so you might expect us to say always hire a professional. We will not. For plenty of tasks, doing it yourself on a free government portal is the right call. This guide draws the line honestly — where DIY works, where it costs you more than it saves, and what a professional genuinely adds.

Nine years. One promise.
Professional service at the lowest transparent price — the same promise since 2017, kept across 1,200+ applications.

The honest principle
The right choice comes down to one question: how error-prone is the task, and how expensive is a mistake? A single-step job on a free portal, with documents that already agree, is a fine thing to do yourself. A multi-step job — several documents to align, an affidavit and newspaper notice to match a gazette, records that disagree with each other — is where a small error causes a rejection, a restart, and weeks lost. That is where paying for accuracy is cheaper than doing it twice.
Our value is not doing things you could easily do yourself. It is handling the cases where getting it right the first time actually matters. We would rather tell you a task is a simple DIY correction than take money for it, because that honesty is what brings people back for the jobs that genuinely need us.
When DIY is genuinely fine
If you are comfortable online and your records are consistent, these are reasonable to handle yourself — several at no cost:
- Aadhaar online document update — the document-refresh facility has been free within its window; see Aadhaar update rules.
- Udyam (MSME) registration — free on the official portal when your Aadhaar, PAN and GST details already match; see Udyam registration explained.
- Setting up and using DigiLocker — free to use; see DigiLocker explained.
- A simple salaried tax return with a clean Form 16 — many people file this themselves; see income tax return basics.
- A straightforward correction where an existing document already proves the right detail.
Our guides are written to help you do it yourself
Notice that our knowledge articles include the official portal links and the actual steps. That is deliberate — if you can do it alone, we would rather you succeed with our guide than pay for something you did not need.
When professional help is worth it
Help earns its fee when the task is error-prone, multi-step, or where a rejection is expensive. Typically:
- A real name change touching several documents — gazette, then Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank, in the right order. See name mismatch across documents.
- A gazette, where the affidavit, newspaper advertisement and application must match word for word or the file bounces.
- A passport reissue with mismatched records, where one wrong detail means rejection and a fresh fee.
- GST registration or notices, where format and deadlines are unforgiving — see GST services.
- Legal drafting — affidavits, agreements, declarations — where wording carries consequences; see affidavit drafting.
- Anything on a deadline, where a preventable delay costs you an appointment, an admission, or a travel date.
DIY versus using us
| Doing it yourself | Using Harsiddhi Services | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Only the government fee (sometimes zero) | Government fee plus a fixed professional fee, disclosed up front |
| Your time | You research, prepare and follow up | We do the legwork; you send documents and approve |
| Error risk | Higher on multi-step or mismatched cases | Lower — we reconcile and cross-check before filing |
| Sequencing | Easy to do steps out of order and redo them | Handled in the right order the first time |
| Follow-up | You chase the file and track status | We track and update you, usually on WhatsApp |
| Best for | Simple, single-step tasks with clean records | Multi-step, error-prone or deadline-driven cases |
Neither column is universally better. The honest answer is: match the approach to the task in front of you.
What we actually add — and what we do not claim
Three things, honestly stated
1. Reconciliation. We make your documents agree before anything is filed — the single biggest cause of rejection is records that disagree.
2. Accuracy. We draft affidavits and applications that match word for word, so nothing bounces on a wording mismatch.
3. Sequencing and follow-up. We do the steps in the right order and chase the file, so you are not redoing work or sitting in silence.
What we do not claim: we cannot guarantee approval or a fixed date — those rest with the authority — and we are not a government body. Anyone promising guaranteed outcomes is overselling. We improve the quality of your file; we do not control the decision on it.
If that framing sounds fair, it is because it is how we actually work. Send us your case and we will tell you which side of the line it falls on — including when the answer is do it yourself.
The bottom line
We built this page to be useful even if you never hire us. If you do, you get the same thing this page gave you — straight answers — plus a team that files, follows up and finishes. The quote is free and binding.
