How the change is actually made
A name change on a passport is always done as a reissue — there is no way to amend or sticker the existing booklet for a change of personal particulars. You apply for "Re-issue of Passport" with a change in name, and the process produces a fresh passport with a new number, cancelling the old one. The reissue itself follows the standard flow: register on the portal, fill the form selecting the name change, pay the fee and book an appointment, then visit the Passport Seva Kendra with your originals. Because a marriage name change is usually a clean reissue with a good prior record, it is often placed under post-verification, which can make it quicker than a first passport. Documents: marriage certificate, joint declaration — or a gazette?
This is where people over-complicate things, often paying for steps they do not need. For a marriage-related surname change, the common supporting routes are:
- Marriage certificate. A registered marriage certificate is the most straightforward support for adding or changing to a spouse's surname.

Do you need a gazette? Usually not
For a straightforward surname change after marriage, a gazette notification is generally not required — the marriage certificate or joint declaration usually does the job. A gazette becomes relevant when the change is more than a marriage surname adoption — for example a full name change, a change of first name, or where a specific office insists on gazette proof. The order that avoids mismatch headaches
The single most common problem after a marriage name change is a mismatch — the passport shows the married name while Aadhaar or PAN still shows the maiden name, and the next office that checks flags it. Avoid this by changing your name in a deliberate order rather than piecemeal:
- Decide the exact final name. Settle the precise spelling and form you will use everywhere, so you are not correcting in different directions later.
- Update your foundational records first. Aligning Aadhaar and PAN to the married name means your passport reissue is supported by consistent proofs.
- Then reissue the passport. With the certificate or joint declaration and matching identity documents, the reissue goes through cleanly.
- Finally, update the rest. Bank, insurance, employer and other records, now that a strong document set exists in the married name.

Reverting to your maiden name after divorce
The mirror image — removing a spouse's name or reverting to your maiden name after divorce — is also handled as a reissue. A certified copy of the divorce decree is typically used to support it. Helpfully, under the December 2016 liberalisation, a divorced applicant is generally not required to furnish the ex-spouse's name. As always, requirements are applied case by case, so confirm the current position on the official portal for your situation.
If your divorce also involved a court-ordered name change or you want a formal public record of reverting, a gazette may be worth considering; if a decree suffices for the passport, it may not be necessary.
