Why it pays to know the format before you need it
Most people meet their gazette notification exactly once — the day it is published — and hand it to a bank clerk without ever really reading it. That is a risk: the published entry is what every future office will rely on, and an unnoticed error can surface years later at the worst moment — a passport interview, a property registration, a visa application.
Ten minutes with the format gives you two abilities: checking your own entry for errors the day it arrives, and spotting a fake or worthless "certificate" if anyone offers you one.
The anatomy of a published name-change entry
The Gujarat Government Gazette is issued by the Directorate of Government Printing & Stationery, Gandhinagar, in numbered parts covering different categories of government business; personal notices such as name changes appear in the part reserved for them, with the part and section headings printed on the gazette PDF itself. Your notice is one entry within such an issue:

A PDF is the official document — and that is a good thing
Gujarat discontinued printed gazettes and moved to online-only publication in July 2021. Since then, every gazette issue — including the one carrying your name change — is published as a PDF on the official portal, egazette.gujarat.gov.in, downloadable free of charge. There is no printed original to collect from Gandhinagar, no courier to wait for, and no fee to obtain your copy.
People sometimes feel short-changed receiving "just a PDF" after a weeks-long process. In practice the e-gazette is stronger than paper: the same document is available to you, your bank and the passport office from one official source, at any time, and cannot be lost the way a paper original could. Where offices want paper, you submit a printout, with the portal as the authoritative backstop.

How to verify a published entry
Verification means confirming the notice exists inside a genuine gazette issue on the official portal. Anyone can do it — that is what gives the gazette its evidentiary strength.
- Go to the official portal. Open egazette.gujarat.gov.in directly — not a link from an email or a third-party site.
- Locate the issue. Search by date range and category, or by the issue reference — the issue number and date printed on your PDF are the fastest route.
- Open the PDF and find the entry. Confirm your notice appears, and that the masthead, number and date match the copy you hold.
- Compare copies. If a "copy" someone hands you differs in any detail from the portal version, the portal wins — full stop.
Can a gazette entry be faked? A PDF can be doctored; the portal cannot. Any office that doubts a printout can check the portal — and you can invite them to.
What to check the day your entry is published
Read your entry the day you receive it, with your affidavit beside it. Five checks, two minutes each:
- New name, letter by letter. Exactly right, including spacing and initials — this spelling is about to propagate into Aadhaar, PAN and beyond.
- Old name against the record being corrected. A mismatch here weakens the whole chain of evidence.
- Father's or husband's name and address. Errors here can make an office question whether the entry is really yours.
- Issue number and date noted. Your permanent reference for verification.
- The PDF archived. Saved, emailed, backed up — before you need it in a hurry.
If you find an error — and what we can and cannot do
Errors that originated in the application need a correction notice through the Government Press, which takes time; no agent can amend a published gazette directly. What we do control: on publication day we check the entry against your file line by line, and if a correction is needed, pursuing it is part of our service — not a new engagement. The correction itself, like the original publication, rests with the Press.
