Starting a Meesho shop? Get the GST part right from day one

Meesho has turned lakhs of home entrepreneurs into online sellers, and GST is usually the first official paperwork they ever face. This page explains, in plain words, what the law asks of a Meesho supplier — and how we take the whole burden off you for ₹499 a month.

Who this is for

The first-time businessperson, selling from home

The typical Meesho supplier we meet at our Vadodara office has never filed a business return in their life. A homemaker reselling suits from the wholesale market. A tailor listing her own blouses. A student flipping phone covers. Meesho's zero-commission model made starting easy — and then the first payment report arrived with a "TCS" line nobody had explained, or the supplier panel asked for a GSTIN and the whole project stalled.

None of this needs to be intimidating. GST for a small Meesho seller is a short list of one-time tasks and a small monthly routine. What it does need is accuracy, because the penalties for ignoring it fall hardest on the sellers with the thinnest margins. Everything below assumes zero prior knowledge; for more depth, see GST for online sellers.

The requirement

Do you need a GSTIN to sell on Meesho?

For most suppliers, yes. Ordinarily a Gujarat goods trader registers only after crossing ₹40 lakh in annual turnover — but that threshold vanishes for marketplace selling. Section 24(ix) of the CGST Act requires registration from anyone supplying goods through a platform that collects tax at source, however small their sales. Meesho collects TCS, so the rule reaches every taxable-goods supplier on it.

There is a genuine small-seller relaxation. From 1 October 2023, a seller below the threshold can supply goods through e-commerce without a GSTIN, using an enrolment number from the GST portal — but strictly within one state, with no inter-state orders at all. Think honestly about whether that fits Meesho's reality: the app shows your product to buyers everywhere, and limiting sales to Gujarat alone cuts off most of the demand that makes the platform attractive. Check the current onboarding options in Meesho's supplier panel and on gst.gov.in before deciding.

If you deal purely in GST-exempt goods, neither a GSTIN nor an enrolment number is required — a genuine category, but a narrow one, since most apparel, accessories and household items on Meesho are taxable. The broader question is covered in do I need GST registration.

Composition scheme

"Can I just pay 1% under composition?" — usually no

First-time sellers often hear about the composition scheme — 1% of turnover, quarterly filings — and assume it was made for them. For Meesho selling it almost never works, for one decisive reason: a composition dealer cannot make inter-state outward supplies. The 2023 relaxation permits composition e-commerce sales only within the dealer's own state, which collides with the nationwide order flow that defines Meesho.

Composition also bars collecting tax from customers and claiming input credit, and it excludes service supplies through TCS platforms entirely. Weigh it only if you genuinely intend to ship within Gujarat alone — the trade-offs are compared in composition versus regular GST, with scheme mechanics on the composition scheme page.

TCS & volumes

Low-ticket, high-volume: what TCS means for ₹300 orders

Meesho selling runs on thin slices: hundreds of orders at ₹200–₹600, heavy discounting, and a return/RTO rate that can swallow a fifth of shipments. GST compliance here is less about big tax amounts and more about keeping accurate counts.

The TCS line in your payment sheet works like this. Meesho must collect 0.5% of your net taxable sales — 0.25% CGST plus 0.25% SGST on within-state orders, 0.5% IGST otherwise. (The rate was 1% before 10 July 2024; Notification 15/2024-CT halved it, so ignore older videos still teaching 1%.) On a ₹400 order that is ₹2 — trivial per order, but across 1,000 monthly orders it becomes ₹2,000 of your money parked with the government. Meesho reports it against your GSTIN in GSTR-8 by the 10th of the next month; you claim it on the portal, it enters your electronic cash ledger, and it pays your tax. Left unclaimed, it sits idle.

The word "net" carries the real work. Returns and RTO reduce the value Meesho collects TCS on, and your GSTR-1 must report net-of-returns figures too — copying gross order totals from the app overstates your sales and your tax. Every month we line up three numbers — Meesho's sales report, its TCS report, and the GSTR-1 we file — so they tell the same story.

Missed months are the other volume killer. Even a zero-sales month needs a nil return; skipping one costs ₹20 per day up to ₹500 — real money at Meesho margins. Details in GST late fees and interest.

Onboarding

From GSTIN to live listings

Once your registration is approved, connecting it to Meesho is the quick part. The sequence for a new supplier:

  1. Get the GSTINProprietorship registration needs PAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof (a home address is fine, with the owner's consent letter if it is not in your name) and bank proof. Filed as REG-01 — no government fee — with approval typically inside 7 working days after Aadhaar authentication. Details on our registration page.
  2. Enter it in the supplier panelMeesho verifies the GSTIN against the portal; the business name it fetches must match your registration.
  3. Match your bank accountUsing the same account you gave in the GST registration avoids verification friction later.
  4. Start the return routineGSTR-1 by the 11th, GSTR-3B by the 20th — or the quarterly QRMP scheme if you prefer fewer filings.

One GSTIN, many uses

The same GSTIN works on every marketplace — adding Flipkart or Amazon later needs no fresh registration, only more reconciliation. Our Flipkart sellers page covers multi-platform bookkeeping.

Our service

Built for people doing this for the first time

We are a Vadodara documentation centre, working since 2017, with a registered GST practitioner (PID 242000004888GPL) handling GST files. First-time sellers get the version of us that explains everything twice and writes it down:

  • ₹499 one-time registration — we prepare and file everything, guide you through Aadhaar authentication, answer any officer query, and hand over your GSTIN with a one-page "what happens every month" note.
  • ₹499 per month filing — you forward your Meesho reports; we prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, claim the month's TCS, and send a short WhatsApp summary of what was filed and paid.
  • No jargon, no surprise charges — every fee is fixed in writing first; the GST pricing page lists the lot.

Sellers who want practitioner-depth material — notices, refunds, advisory — will find it on our specialist site GujaratGST.in.

When you do not need us — and what we cannot do

If you sell only exempt goods, or will genuinely ship within Gujarat alone under the enrolment-number route, you may not need registration — or us. The portal is free and self-service; our fee buys correctness and your evenings back. And the honest limits: we are facilitators, not a government office. We cannot guarantee approval or timelines, cannot waive late fees already incurred, and cannot make Meesho settle payments faster. Decisions rest with the GST authorities and the platform.

Before you decide

The bottom line

The difference between a smooth application and a stuck one is usually preparation, not luck. Preparation is precisely what you are paying us for — and at our prices, it is the cheapest insurance this process offers.

FAQs

Questions new Meesho sellers ask us

Do I need GST to start selling on Meesho?
For taxable goods sold to buyers across India — which is how Meesho works for most suppliers — yes. Registration is compulsory for goods sold through TCS-collecting platforms regardless of turnover. A limited exception exists for sellers shipping only within their own state; check Meesho's supplier panel and gst.gov.in for whether you qualify.
What is the enrolment number option I have read about?
Since 1 October 2023, a seller below the threshold may sell goods through e-commerce without a GSTIN, using an enrolment number from the GST portal — but only within one state, with no inter-state orders. If a Vadodara buyer and a Mumbai buyer can both order your product, this route is not available.
Can I take the composition scheme to keep things simple?
Usually not. Composition dealers cannot make inter-state outward supplies at all, and Meesho sends your parcels nationwide; the 2023 relaxation covers e-commerce sales within your own state only. For a typical reseller, regular registration is the workable choice.
What is the TCS deduction I see in my Meesho payments?
Meesho must collect tax at source at 0.5% of your net taxable sales — 0.25% CGST plus 0.25% SGST, or 0.5% IGST. The rate came down from 1% on 10 July 2024 under Notification 15/2024-CT. The amount is reported against your GSTIN and comes back as credit you can use to pay your GST.
How do I get the TCS back?
After Meesho files its GSTR-8 by the 10th of the next month, the amount shows against your GSTIN on the portal. You claim it, it moves into your electronic cash ledger, and it pays your tax. We handle this monthly for filing clients; portal steps can change, so confirm on gst.gov.in if doing it yourself.
Returns and RTO eat a big share of my orders. How does that affect tax?
TCS applies to net taxable value, so returns reduce the base on which Meesho collects. Your GST returns must report accurate net figures too — which is why we reconcile the platform's sales and returns reports against GSTR-1 each month instead of copying gross order values.
Which GST returns will I have to file, and how often?
As a regular taxpayer: GSTR-1 by the 11th of each month and GSTR-3B by the 20th, or the quarterly QRMP option if your turnover is within ₹5 crore. Even months with zero sales need nil returns — skipping them attracts late fees of ₹20 per day for nil returns, capped at ₹500.
I have never run a business before. What documents do I need to register?
For a proprietorship — what most home sellers are — you need PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, proof of your home or shop address such as an electricity bill (plus owner's consent letter if rented), and a bank proof like a cancelled cheque. Registration on the portal carries no government fee.
What will Harsiddhi Services charge me, and what do I get?
₹499 one-time for registration — paperwork, filing, query replies, through to your GSTIN. ₹499 per month for return filing — GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, TCS claiming and reconciliation with your Meesho reports, plus a plain-language monthly summary. Both fees are fixed in writing before we start.
If I stop selling on Meesho, can I close the GST registration?
Yes — voluntary cancellation is applied for in Form REG-16, after which a final return (GSTR-10) is due within three months of the cancellation order. Clear any pending returns first; our GST cancellation page explains the sequence.
